Your performance disappointing, comple your current tenure and step aside – Christian elders tell Tinubu

The National Christian Elders Forum (NCEF) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to seek re-election in the 2027 presidential election, describing the performance of his administration as “manifestly disappointing.”

In a communiqué dated July 9 and signed by the Forum’s National Chairman, Samuel Gani, the Christian elders said the Federal Government had performed poorly in the areas of national security, economic management and the welfare of Nigerians.

According to the communiqué, the current direction of the Tinubu administration has created anxiety rather than hope among citizens.

> “The direction in which the Tinubu presidency is leading the nation offers increasing apprehension rather than hope and this state of affairs has left all patriots with no option but to call on President Tinubu to please desist from seeking re-election for a second term, but instead, like a statesman with an eye on history and posterity, to earnestly commit the rest of his tenure to restructuring Nigeria and giving her a new constitution,” the communiqué stated.

The forum also renewed its criticism of the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket, describing the decision as insensitive, particularly at a time when insecurity continues to affect many parts of the country.

According to the group, Christians remain among those most affected by widespread violence and killings across the nation.

The NCEF further cautioned the judiciary against any perception of bias in resolving election-related disputes, warning that Nigeria is at a critical stage where public confidence in democratic institutions must be protected.

The forum also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remain independent and ensure the conduct of free, fair and credible elections.

On the issue of power rotation, the Christian elders acknowledged that the North-South rotational presidency is not expressly provided for in the Constitution but argued that it remains important for national unity, inclusion and political stability.

> “And for that reason, patriots are urged to support a southern candidature in 2027 for the four remaining years of the South’s current turn,” the forum stated.

The NCEF also demanded an independent investigation into the controversy surrounding the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), describing the matter as a serious indictment of the Tinubu administration.

The group alleged that the compromise of public institutions under the current government was reminiscent of past military-era governance and warned that such a trend must be halted.

It added that Nigerians were yearning for genuine reforms, stressing that the patience of citizens grappling with prolonged economic hardship should not be taken for granted.
