Zulum’s ex-Commissioner Gubio picks APC governorship form
A former Commissioner for Works and Housing in Borno State, Mustapha Gubio, has formally entered the race for the state’s top office after obtaining the governorship nomination form of the All Progressives Congress.
Gubio, who recently resigned from the state executive council, is the first aspirant to secure the APC gubernatorial form ahead of the next election cycle in Borno State.
His move was publicly confirmed through a photo shared by the governor’s spokesperson, Dauda Illiya, showing the aspirant alongside the senator representing Borno North, Tahir Monguno, presenting the nomination form to Governor Babagana Zulum in Maiduguri.
In a brief message accompanying the image, Illiya wrote: “Zulum receives Borno APC guber aspirant, Engr. Mustapha Gubio.”
Gubio’s entry into the race comes weeks after Governor Zulum approved the dissolution of the State Executive Council, a move widely interpreted as clearing the path for political appointees interested in contesting elective positions.
According to a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Bukar Tijani, the dissolution was aimed at providing a level playing field for council members seeking to participate in the forthcoming elections.
Before his resignation, Gubio oversaw several infrastructure projects across Borno State as Commissioner for Works and Housing, positioning him as a key figure in the state’s development landscape.
His early declaration is expected to shape the dynamics of the APC governorship contest in Borno, as other aspirants are anticipated to join the race in the coming weeks.
