Weeks ahead of the start of party primaries, the All Progressives Congress is moving decisively to adopt President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as its sole presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.

According to the revised timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission, party primaries and resolution of disputes will run from April 23 to May 30, 2026.

All six APC zones recently held congresses, reaffirming their commitment to Tinubu’s candidacy.

The North Central zone led the process, with Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, moving the motion, which was seconded by Governor Abdullahi Sule.

Party delegates from seven states and the FCT re-elected former zonal vice chairman, Mu’azu Mohammed Bawa Rijau, to guide the zone ahead of the elections.

In the South-West, newly elected Zonal Chairman Isaac Kekemeke pledged to deliver strong voter support for Tinubu.

Governors including Dapo Abiodun, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Biodun Oyebanji, and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele attended the congress alongside Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who described the exercise as transparent and constitutional.

The South-South zonal congress at Asaba, Delta State, saw all governors commit to Tinubu’s re-election. Governor Douye Diri highlighted consensus-based elections as key to party unity. Chief Victor Giadom and Samuel Nwanosike, allies of Nyesom Wike, were elected Zonal Vice Chairman and Publicity Secretary respectively.

At the North-West congress in Kaduna, Governor Uba Sani encouraged delegates to promote Tinubu’s reforms, linking them to security improvements and economic growth. Newly elected Vice Chairman Garba Datti Babawo pledged to mobilise support for the president.

The North-East congress in Gombe, led by APC North-East Coordinator and Governor Mai Mala Buni, emphasised unity and electoral mobilisation. Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri stressed teamwork as critical to success.

The newly elected zonal executive included Idris Shu’aibu (Vice Chairman), Baba Ali (Secretary), Nitte Amangal (Publicity Secretary), and Hajiya Lumbi Abubakar (Women Leader).

In the South-East, Governors Peter Mbah and Hope Uzodimma praised Tinubu’s reform agenda and highlighted the consensus arrangement as a sign of party cohesion.

Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu was re-elected as South-East National Vice Chairman.

APC National Chairman Nentawe Yiltwada lauded the North Central zone as a “steadfast fortress” for the party and urged all newly elected zonal officers to promote unity, grassroots engagement, and adherence to APC’s principles ahead of the 2027 elections.

Background

As the 2027 general elections approach, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is moving decisively to consolidate support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as its sole presidential candidate.

In line with the revised timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), party primaries and the resolution of disputes will take place between April 23 and May 30, 2026, prompting nationwide preparations by party structures.

Zonal congresses held across all six geopolitical zones of the party have reaffirmed their commitment to Tinubu’s re-election bid, with state chapters echoing similar endorsements weeks earlier.

The events, attended by governors, ministers, and party stakeholders, highlighted a coordinated strategy to mobilise support and deliver the highest votes for the president in 2027.

Party leaders emphasised internal unity, grassroots mobilisation, and alignment with the “Renewed Hope” agenda, presenting a unified front ahead of the elections.

This concerted effort reflects the APC’s determination to strengthen its national position, mitigate potential intra-party disputes, and demonstrate cohesive leadership across the federation in anticipation of the 2027 polls.
