2027: Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso, Makinde meet August 18 to discuss alliance against Tinubu

The G100, a coalition of concerned Nigerians, has commenced consultations with leaders of major opposition political parties as part of efforts to build a united opposition front ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group said it had completed a first round of discussions with leaders of six opposition parties, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress, Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, the Allied Peoples Movement associated with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, as well as the Peoples Democratic Party, Peoples Redemption Party and Social Democratic Party.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by Salihu Moh. Lukman on behalf of the G100, the group described its engagements with national chairmen, presidential candidates and running mates as “frank, constructive and encouraging.”

The consultations followed an open letter issued by the group on August 2, 2026, to opposition leaders, leaders of thought, civil society organisations and Nigerians of good conscience.

The letter outlined what the G100 described as the “Doctrine of Necessary Democratic Opposition”, which advocates the emergence of a credible and effective opposition capable of challenging for political power.

The group said it deliberately kept the consultations away from the media to allow party leaders to discuss sensitive issues without the pressure of public scrutiny.

“We have deliberately kept these consultations away from the glare of the media, in recognition of the sensitivity of many of the discussions and the need to allow party leaders to engage frankly and constructively without the pressure of premature public commentary,” the statement said.

According to the G100, the discussions revealed a growing recognition among opposition parties that greater cooperation would be necessary ahead of the 2027 elections.

It said the party leaders acknowledged that building a credible opposition would require sacrifice, compromise and a willingness to place national interests above narrow partisan and individual considerations.

G100 Plans Opposition Summit

Building on the consultations, the G100 announced plans to convene a Summit of Opposition Parties in Abuja on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.

The summit is expected to provide a structured platform for participating parties to begin discussions on possible areas of cooperation and the modalities for achieving greater opposition unity.

The group, however, said it would not dictate the outcome of the discussions or impose a particular political arrangement on the parties.

“The G100 does not presume to dictate the outcome of these conversations. Our role is to facilitate dialogue, build confidence and help create the conditions in which the participating political parties can openly consider the difficult questions of cooperation, sacrifice, accommodation and collective action,” it said.

The coalition stressed that any framework emerging from the process must accommodate the legitimate interests of participating political parties while keeping the interests of Nigerians as the overriding consideration.

It argued that Nigeria’s democracy would be strengthened if voters were presented with a credible political alternative capable of effectively competing for their mandate.

According to the group, continued fragmentation among opposition parties could undermine efforts to provide such an alternative.

“The central argument of the Doctrine of Necessary Democratic Opposition remains that Nigeria’s democracy is strengthened when citizens are presented with a credible alternative capable of competing effectively for their mandate,” the statement said.

The G100 added that the consultations were only the beginning of what it described as a difficult process that would require patience, courage and sacrifice from the participating parties and political leaders.

“The G100 remains committed to help facilitate the process of unity of Nigeria’s main opposition parties and leaders in good faith and in the overriding interest of Nigeria and its democracy,” the group said.
