2027: Big battle for Wike as APC Govs move against Rainbow Coalition, parallel structures capable of undermining Tinubu, APC candidates

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors’ Forum has warned against political alliances and arrangements capable of weakening the party or undermining President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in the 2027 general elections.

The governors reached the resolution after a closed-door meeting in Abuja, where they agreed that members of the forum would not support or endorse political arrangements that could create divided loyalty or competing interests within the APC.

Chairman of the forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, announced the position after the meeting.

Uzodimma said the governors remained committed to strengthening the ruling party and protecting the interests of APC candidates at all levels ahead of the 2027 elections.

“The APC Governors’ Forum unanimously resolved that its members will not participate in, support, or endorse any alliance or political arrangement capable of undermining the re-election of Mr President, weakening the APC, or adversely affecting any candidate of the party at all levels,” he said.

The resolution comes amid increasing political activities surrounding the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and his emerging “Rainbow Coalition”.

Although Wike has repeatedly maintained that the coalition is primarily aimed at supporting Tinubu’s re-election, its association with politicians and candidates operating on different party platforms has generated concerns among some APC stakeholders.

Some members of the ruling party have expressed fears that politicians could support Tinubu for president while backing candidates from opposition parties in governorship, National Assembly and other elections, potentially weakening APC candidates in those contests.

Wike had recently criticised some APC governors, including Uzodimma and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, accusing them of working against his political activities ahead of the 2027 elections.

The FCT Minister has maintained that he remains committed to Tinubu’s re-election, while questioning opposition to his political activities.

Wike has also argued that supporting Tinubu at the presidential level should not prevent him from backing candidates from other political parties whom he believes have the capacity to win their respective elections.

The APC governors’ latest resolution, however, draws a clear distinction between supporting Tinubu’s presidential bid and political arrangements that could affect the fortunes of other APC candidates.

The position also underscores concerns within the ruling party over the possibility of competing political interests creating divisions in its electoral structure ahead of the 2027 polls.

With political alignments intensifying ahead of the elections, the governors have now insisted that their members must avoid arrangements capable of undermining APC candidates or weakening the party’s overall electoral prospects.
