AFCON: CAF scraps four-year tournament format, reinstates two-year cycle
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reversed its decision to hold the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) every four years, restoring the competition to its traditional two-year cycle.
The decision was unanimously reached at the CAF Executive Committee meeting held on Thursday.
CAF President, Patrice Motsepe, had recently announced at the continent’s strategy conference in Cabo Verde that the executive committee would review the decision taken last year to change the tournament’s frequency from every two years to four years.
CAF earlier proposed that the new Africa Nations League would replace the AFCON and take place every two years.
The body, however, stated that the Africa Nations League would require several years in order to be in a position to be globally competitive and self-supporting.
Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda will co-host the next edition of the AFCON scheduled for 2027.
