2027 Poll: Amid outcry over Ramadan, INEC says February 20 Date backed by Law
INEC confirmed that the Presidential and National Assembly elections are slated for Saturday, February 20, 2027, while Governorship and State Assembly polls will hold on Saturday, March 6, 2027.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified that the dates announced for the 2027 General Election were fixed in line with constitutional and legal provisions, amid concerns raised by stakeholders.
In a statement addressing public reactions to its recently released Timetable and Schedule of Activities, the Commission said the dates were determined in strict compliance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act, 2022, and its Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections.
INEC noted that its Regulations and Guidelines, in effect since 2019, clearly stipulate when general elections are to be conducted.
Quoting Paragraph 2 of the Regulations, the Commission stated:
“Election to the office of President and Vice President, as well as National Assembly, shall hold on the Third Saturday of February of any General Election year, while election to the Office of Governor and Deputy Governor and the State Houses of Assembly shall hold two (2) weeks thereafter.”
Based on this provision, INEC fixed Saturday, February 20, 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, and Saturday, March 6, 2027, for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.
Concerns Over Observances
The Commission acknowledged concerns raised by stakeholders regarding the overlap of the scheduled dates with certain nationally recognised holidays and observances.
INEC said it remains sensitive to legitimate concerns that could affect electoral participation and the overall conduct of the elections.
“In view of these representations, the Commission is currently undertaking consultations and may, where necessary, seek appropriate legislative intervention to address the concerns raised, while ensuring that any adjustment remains consistent with constitutional and statutory requirements,” the statement read.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, inclusivity and the credible conduct of the 2027 General Election, assuring the public that further updates would be communicated as necessary.
