SA opposition leader, Julius Malema gets five-year jail term over gun fire incident

A court in South Africa on Thursday sentenced Julius Malema, a radical left-wing opposition figure, to five years in prison for discharging an assault rifle at a political rally eight years ago.
The ruling has stirred strong political reactions, with hundreds of supporters of his party, the Economic Freedom Fighters, gathering outside the court dressed in the party’s signature red attire.
The case, which has been widely viewed as politically sensitive, has continued to draw attention due to Malema’s influence in South Africa’s opposition politics.
Magistrate Twanet Olivier said Malema had deliberately violated firearm laws by shooting a gun in the air at an EFF celebration in 2018.
