World Cup Playoff: Tension in Super Eagles’ Camp as Players boycott training over NFF debts
The Super Eagles have reportedly boycotted their training session in protest against unpaid allowances owed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
According to a source close to the team, the players and officials refused to attend their scheduled evening training on Tuesday.
It was gathered that the allowances for qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2026 World Cup playoff are yet to be paid.
Some senior members of the team are also said to be owed bonuses dating back to 2019.
Nigeria is set to face Gabon in one of the semi-finals of the 2026 African World Cup playoffs on Thursday.
The winner will proceed to face either Congo DR or Cameroon in the final to secure the continent’s slot for the intercontinental playoff.
All 24 players invited by team manager Eric Chelle are currently camped in Rabat, Morocco, and have reportedly resolved not to resume training until the NFF addresses their outstanding payments.
The NFF has a history of delayed payments to national teams. In 2024, President Bola Tinubu approved a N12 billion intervention fund to settle 15 months of unpaid salaries for national team coaches, as well as outstanding allowances and bonuses for the senior men’s, women’s, and U-20 teams.
