‘No democracy, no loyalty’ — Tuggar’s supporters threaten to dump APC.
Tensions are rising within the Bauchi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as supporters of former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, have threatened to dump the party over alleged moves to impose a governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.
The controversy follows growing speculation that former Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed Abubakar, may emerge as the party’s consensus candidate for the governorship ticket.
Speaking in an interview with Punch, the Director of Media for the Tuggar Foundation, Ibrahim Malam, said supporters of the former minister would not remain in a political party where internal democracy is allegedly undermined.
Malam, however, clarified that his comments reflected the position of Tuggar’s supporters and not an official statement from the former minister himself.
According to him, the group is opposed to any arrangement that replaces open competition with a consensus choice.
“Regarding this narration of somebody becoming the APC flag bearer who is not competent, somebody who lost an election, we can’t remain in the party where democracy is not practised,” he said.
He added that consultations were ongoing among supporters, warning that defection remains an option if their concerns are not addressed.
The development highlights widening cracks within the Bauchi APC ahead of its governorship primaries, as rival camps intensify lobbying and internal negotiations over the party’s flag bearer.
Social commentator and pharmacist, Bello Adamu, also criticised the alleged consensus arrangement, describing it as undemocratic and unacceptable to party members.
“We reject this imposition, and I don’t think any one of us is going to support anybody if that happens,” he said.
The APC leadership in Bauchi State has yet to officially respond to the allegations or the growing discontent within the party ranks.
Political observers say the unfolding dispute could significantly shape the party’s fortunes in one of its most closely watched states ahead of 2027.
