Vinicius Junior, Hakimi shine as Morocco, Brazil share points in World Cup opener
Five-time world champions Brazil were forced to battle back from an early setback to secure a 1-1 draw against African champions Morocco in their opening Group C match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Morocco stunned the South Americans with a brilliantly executed counter-attacking move finished by Ismael Saibari, handing the Atlas Lions a deserved lead and putting Brazil under immediate pressure.
However, Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior restored parity in the 32nd minute with a superbly taken strike, ensuring Brazil avoided an opening-day defeat in a fiercely contested encounter.
The result marks another statement performance from Morocco, who continue to build on their growing reputation on the global stage following their historic World Cup exploits in recent years.
While Brazil remain among the tournament favourites, the draw serves as an early reminder that no fixture can be taken for granted at football’s biggest stage.
Both teams will now turn their attention to their next Group C matches as the battle for qualification intensifies. This version is written in the professional Nigerian news/editorial style suitable for Facebook, blogs, and news pages.
