Iyabo Obasanjo returns to PDP weeks after quitting APC
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s daughter, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, has returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), barely one week after announcing her resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Iyabo had defected to the APC in January 2026 and declared her intention to contest the Ogun State governorship election. However, her governorship ambition suffered a setback after she failed to secure the party’s ticket.
Last Monday, the former senator announced her resignation from the APC, accusing the party’s leadership in Ogun State of persistent disrespect, rejection and unfair treatment.
In a fresh political twist, Iyabo made a surprise appearance at the PDP secretariat in Abeokuta on Monday during the official unveiling of the party’s deputy governorship candidate, Dr. Lateefat Kolapo-Sowunmi.
Her arrival sparked jubilation among party faithful, with leaders and supporters giving her a warm reception as she formally aligned once again with the opposition party.
The former Ogun Central senator joined PDP governorship candidate Ladi Adebutu, state chairman Abayomi Tella and the deputy governorship candidate in presenting the party’s ticket to supporters.
Iyabo, an epidemiologist and former Ogun State Commissioner for Health, had previously served as senator under the PDP before losing her re-election bid in 2011 to Gbenga Obadara of the then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).
Following that defeat, she relocated to the United States, where she pursued an academic career and later attained the rank of professor.
Sources within the PDP disclosed that Senator Obasanjo is expected to formally complete her return to the party at a reception scheduled for Tuesday.
Her comeback is seen as a significant boost for the PDP ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
