Court issues arrest warrant for Sowore over trial linked to anti-Tinubu post
The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the arrest of activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, after he failed to appear for his ongoing cybercrime trial.
Sowore is facing a two-count charge filed by the Department of State Services (DSS), bordering on alleged cyberstalking, following social media posts in which he described President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal” and accused him of making false claims during an overseas engagement.
The activist, who had opted to represent himself after his legal team withdrew from the case, was expected to open his defence at the resumed hearing but did not show up in court.
He, however, sent a letter to the court stating that he had travelled to Lagos in search of legal representation.
Following his absence, counsel to the DSS applied for the revocation of his bail and requested a bench warrant for his arrest. Justice Mohammed Umar granted the application, revoked the earlier bail, and ordered Sowore’s arrest.
The case stems from social media posts made in August 2025 on Sowore’s X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts, where he criticised President Tinubu’s comments during a foreign trip, a development the prosecution says amounts to cyberstalking under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024.
According to the prosecution, the posts were capable of causing a breakdown of law and order and were intended to damage the president’s reputation. Exhibits tendered include screenshots of the posts and official correspondence from the DSS.
The amended charge, which initially included X (formerly Twitter) and Meta Platforms Inc. as co-defendants, now solely lists Sowore. It alleges that his statements were knowingly made and capable of inciting unrest within the country.
Sowore had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges and previously filed an application seeking the recusal of the trial judge, citing concerns over perceived bias.
The court has adjourned further proceedings pending his arrest and appearance.
