The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the public display of the personal particulars and academic credentials of presidential candidates for the 2027 general election.

The exercise, which began on Saturday, features documents submitted by President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his running mate, Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Copies of President Tinubu’s Form EC9, sighted by journalists, show that he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Chicago State University, United States, with honours on June 22, 1979.

The documents also include his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate, indicating that he served in Oyo State between December 1982 and November 1983.

According to the form, Tinubu’s employment history lists three organisations: Mobil Nigeria Limited, where he worked from 1983 to 1992 before leaving for career advancement; the Lagos State Government, where he served as governor from 1999 to 2007; and the Federal Government of Nigeria, where he has served as President since 2023.

The President’s personal details list his date of birth as March 29, 1952, his age as 74, his place of birth as Lagos, his residential address as No. 4 Queen’s Drive, Ikoyi, and his occupation as “Politician.”

However, the years for his primary and secondary education were entered as “0000” on the form, while only his university qualification obtained in 1979 was specified.

For Vice President Shettima, the displayed records provide details of his educational background from primary school.

His Certificate of Primary Education shows he attended Lamisula I Primary School between 1972 and 1978, graduating second out of 22 pupils, with English, History and Religious Knowledge listed among his strongest subjects.

His West African Examinations Council (WAEC) result from Government Secondary School, Potiskum, obtained in June 1983, reflects six credits and passes, including distinctions in Religious Knowledge and Economics.

The records further show that Shettima graduated from the University of Maiduguri in August 1989 with a Second Class Upper Division degree in Agriculture before obtaining a Master of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan.

His NYSC discharge certificate indicates he completed national service between October 1989 and October 1990.

INEC said the publication of the documents, contained in Form EC9, complies with Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act 2026, which requires the commission to publicly display the credentials, personal particulars and affidavits submitted by candidates within 21 days of receiving them.

In a statement, the commission explained that the documents are available for inspection at its offices nationwide, including state and local government offices in the relevant constituencies.

The Electoral Act also empowers members of the public to obtain Certified True Copies of nomination forms and other documents submitted by candidates, as well as challenge alleged false declarations or forged credentials through the courts.

According to INEC’s timetable, campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections will commence on August 19, 2026, while campaigns for governorship and State House of Assembly elections will begin at a later date.
