Magical Messi nets historic hat-trick as Argentina begin World Cup defence in style

Lionel Messi delivered a masterclass performance as reigning world champions Argentina began their World Cup title defence with an impressive victory over Algeria, with the Argentine captain scoring a historic hat-trick.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner marked his 200th international appearance in style, netting his first-ever World Cup hat-trick and equalling the all-time World Cup scoring record.

Messi’s three goals took his tally at the tournament to 16, drawing him level with former German striker Miroslav Klose as the joint-highest goalscorer in World Cup history.

Argentina, aiming to become only the third nation to successfully defend the World Cup, were forced to work hard for the victory despite eventually producing a dominant display.

The South Americans took the lead in the 17th minute when Messi curled a superb effort beyond goalkeeper Luca Zidane after combining with his Inter Miami teammate Rodrigo De Paul.

The goal came during an action-packed opening period that saw both sides have strikes ruled out for offside.

Messi nearly found himself in trouble midway through the first half after a rash challenge on Algeria defender Aissa Mandi, but escaped disciplinary punishment.

The Argentine captain doubled his tally shortly after the hour mark, capitalising on a costly error by goalkeeper Luca Zidane before calmly finishing from close range.

He completed his historic hat-trick in the 76th minute with a powerful strike from the edge of the penalty area after winning possession from Nicolas Gonzalez.

The victory gives Argentina a strong start in Group J as they continue their quest for a fourth World Cup title.

They will now turn their attention to upcoming fixtures against Austria and Jordan.

Messi Makes More History

The performance added another remarkable chapter to Messi’s illustrious international career.

At 38, and just days away from his 39th birthday, the Argentine icon became the oldest player to score a hat-trick at a World Cup and the first footballer to feature in six World Cup tournaments.

His latest achievement has further strengthened his place among football’s greatest players and underlined his determination to lead Argentina’s title defence despite already winning the tournament in Qatar four years ago.

With his goalscoring record now level with Klose’s, attention will once again be focused on Messi when Argentina face Austria in their next group match
