World Cup: Germany stun Ivory Coast 2–1 to seal Knockout spot after dramatic comeback
Germany have booked their place in the World Cup knockout stage for the first time since 2014 after producing a late comeback to defeat Ivory Coast 2–1 in Toronto on Saturday.
Ivory Coast took the lead in the 30th minute through Franck Kessie, who finished from close range after sustained pressure from the African side.
But the Germans turned the game around in the second half, with substitute Deniz Undav emerging as the hero of the night.
Undav pulled Germany level midway through the second half with a well-taken volley before completing the comeback deep into injury time, sealing all three points and confirming Germany’s progression to the next round.
The victory marks a significant milestone for the European giants, who have struggled in recent tournament campaigns but now appear to be regaining form at a crucial stage.
With the result, Germany move into the knockout phase with renewed confidence, while Ivory Coast are left to reflect on a missed opportunity after holding their own for much of the encounter.
