Tinubu Appoints Prof. Oluwatoyin Temitayo as NUC chairman
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe as the new Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Ogundipe succeeds Emeritus Professor Olufemi Raphael Aina, who reportedly resigned from the position after serving less than a year following his appointment in July and inauguration in November 2025.
The new NUC chairman, aged 66, brings extensive academic and administrative experience to the commission. He previously served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos between 2017 and 2022 and is currently the Pro-Chancellor of Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State.
A professor of Botany, Ogundipe specialises in molecular plant taxonomy, biosystematics, ethnobotany, cytogenetics, forensic botany and ecological conservation. He obtained his PhD in Botany from Obafemi Awolowo University and holds an MBA from the University of Lagos.
He has also held several leadership positions, including President of the Botanical Society of Nigeria and Chairman of the Lagos State Science, Research and Innovation Council (LASRIC), and is a fellow of several professional bodies locally and internationally.
In his new role, Ogundipe is expected to oversee the regulatory framework of Nigeria’s university system, with emphasis on funding, academic stability and global competitiveness.
President Tinubu said he expects the new NUC leadership to provide visionary direction in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at improving access, quality and integrity in the education sector.
