Kebbi senator Maidoki defects from APC to ADC, rejects reconciliation plea

Senator representing Kebbi South, Garba Musa Maidoki, has defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress to the African Democratic Congress, citing unresolved internal disputes within the APC.

Maidoki, who chairs the Senate Committee on Legislative Compliance and serves as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation, formally announced his defection in a letter addressed to the Senate and read during Tuesday’s plenary session.

The lawmaker said his decision followed extensive consultations with his constituents and was influenced by lingering disagreements arising from the APC’s recently concluded primaries in Kebbi State.

According to him, the internal crisis within the party had remained unresolved, prompting him to seek a new political platform.

> “There is a lingering internal crisis in the APC, especially arising from the Kebbi primary elections. After due consultation with my constituents, I have decided to defect to the ADC, which I believe aligns more with the interests of my district,” Maidoki stated.

The defection comes amid reports that the senator was among aspirants who were screened out during the APC’s preparations for the 2027 elections.

Presiding over the plenary, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau appealed to Maidoki to reconsider his decision and allow room for reconciliation within the APC.

Barau argued that the issues in Kebbi APC did not amount to a fundamental crisis and could be resolved through internal dialogue.

> “There is no internal problem in the APC in Kebbi State. This is more of a family dispute and we can reconcile,” he said.

However, Maidoki declined the appeal and maintained that his decision was final.

His departure adds to a growing list of politicians leaving the APC for the ADC amid dissatisfaction over party primaries and internal political disagreements ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Political observers believe the move could further reshape the political landscape in Kebbi State and strengthen the ADC’s efforts to position itself as a viable alternative platform ahead of the next election cycle.
