Reno Omokri’s fate as ambassador-designate remains unclear as FG clears 63 envoys

The status of Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico remains uncertain despite the Federal Government announcing fresh progress in the deployment of newly appointed ambassadors and high commissioners.

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed on Tuesday that Letters of Credence had been presented to ambassadors-designate assigned to Trinidad and Tobago, Kenya, Equatorial Guinea and Egypt after receiving formal agrément from their host countries.

According to the ministry, 63 out of the 69 ambassadors appointed by Bola Ahmed Tinubu have now received approval from their host nations, with many already departing Nigeria to assume diplomatic duties.

The ministry, however, did not mention Omokri among the envoys cleared to resume work abroad.

Last week, Omokri claimed during a television interview that his deployment was being delayed because Mexico was heavily occupied with activities related to the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is being jointly hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada.

Meanwhile, the government noted that several appointees have already resumed their assignments, including Femi Fani-Kayode, who eventually took up his posting to South Africa after an earlier reassignment controversy.

In a statement signed by the Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the government expressed confidence that the remaining host countries would soon communicate their acceptance of the outstanding Nigerian envoys.

The ministry said the approvals are essential for strengthening diplomatic relations and ensuring Nigeria’s representation abroad.
