Commonwealth Games: Edidiong Umoafia lifts Nigeria to another gold medal
Team Nigeria’s Edidiong Joseph Umoafia has won the gold medal in the men’s 71kg weightlifting event at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games, boosting the country’s medal haul at the competition.
The victory marks Team Nigeria’s fourth gold medal of the Games and its second medal in the weightlifting event.
Umoafia delivered a dominant performance throughout the competition, lifting 147kg in the snatch before producing 172kg in the clean and jerk to finish with a combined total of 319kg, enough to secure the top spot on the podium.
Samoa’s John Lautafi Tafi claimed the silver medal with a total lift of 314kg, while Ezekiel Moses of Nauru settled for bronze after recording an overall total of 310kg.
The latest triumph comes after Ruth Asuquo Nyong won a silver medal in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event on Sunday, giving Nigeria another podium finish in the sport.
With Umoafia’s victory, Team Nigeria has now won eight medals at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, comprising four gold and four silver medals, as the country’s athletes continue to impress across various events.
