WAFCON 2026: We’ll bounce back against Zambia, says Ucheibe after Malawi shock
Super Falcons midfielder Christy Ucheibe has vowed that Nigeria will bounce back from their shocking defeat to Malawi by giving everything against Zambia in their next match at the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Ucheibe made the pledge after the Super Falcons suffered a surprise 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi in their Group C clash on Tuesday night.
“I’m going to say it’s football. Nothing went wrong; both teams played very well, and that’s just football for you. You lose, you win, or you draw. But either way, you bounce back,” Ucheibe told Victor Ademola.
Looking ahead to Nigeria’s next fixture, she expressed confidence that the team would recover and progress in the competition.
“In the next game against Zambia, we will try our best to get through this phase so we can qualify for the World Cup and defend our title,” she said.
Malawi produced one of the biggest upsets in WAFCON history by defeating the 10-time African champions 3-2 in Rabat.
The Scorchers stunned Nigeria with three second-half goals from sisters Temwa Chawinga and Tabita Chawinga.
The Super Falcons fought back through a Rasheedat Ajibade penalty and a late strike from Uchenna Kanu but were unable to complete the comeback.
The defeat leaves Nigeria third in Group C without a point and with a goal difference of minus one.
The Super Falcons will now face Zambia on Saturday in a crucial encounter as they seek to revive their campaign and keep their hopes of retaining the WAFCON title alive.
