Veteran Journalist, former Oyo Governors’ aide Lekan Alabi passes away at 76

Veteran journalist, respected public relations expert and former Chief Press Secretary to several Oyo State governors, Oloye Lekan Alabi, has died at the age of 76.

Alabi, who also held the traditional title of Abese of Ibadanland, reportedly passed away on Saturday morning in Lagos.

His death was confirmed in a statement issued by the Olubadan Palace and signed by the Media Aide to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Adeola Oloko.

The palace described Alabi as a distinguished media personality whose contributions to journalism, public relations and public service earned him widespread respect.

According to the statement, the late media veteran will be laid to rest on Sunday in line with Islamic burial rites.

“The veteran journalist and multiple Press Secretary to former Oyo State governors, Lekan Alabi, is dead. The Abese Olubadan passed away this morning in Lagos at the age of 76 years,” the statement said.

It added, “Family sources say he would be buried tomorrow in accordance with Islamic rites.”

Alabi was widely regarded as one of Oyo State’s most accomplished journalists and communication strategists.

During his distinguished career, he served as Chief Press Secretary to successive governors of the state, earning a reputation for professionalism, eloquence and dedication to public service.

Beyond journalism and public communication, the late Alabi was a respected historian, author and cultural ambassador who made significant contributions to the preservation and promotion of the history and cultural heritage of Ibadanland and Yorubaland.

His death has attracted tributes from political leaders, media professionals, traditional institutions and associates across the country, who remember him for his contributions to journalism, public service and cultural advocacy.

The family is expected to announce further details of his funeral arrangements after his burial, which will be conducted in line with Islamic traditions.
