Sultan of Sokoto denies endorsing Tinubu for 2027, says he has no preferred presidential candidate

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has dismissed reports claiming he urged Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in the 2027 presidential election, insisting that he has no preferred candidate in the race.

The revered traditional ruler made this known in a statement issued by his media aide, Prince Bashir Adefaka, describing the reports circulating on social media as false, malicious and an attempt to drag him into partisan politics.

According to the statement, the Sultan, as a father to all Nigerians, cannot publicly or privately endorse any presidential candidate.

“The attention of the Media Team of the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, mni, has been drawn to a report circulating on some social media platforms creating the impression that the Sultan has called on Nigerians to support the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

“Our simple response to the report is that it is not possible for the Sultan, as the father of all, to make such a statement, either publicly or in any other forum,” the statement read.

The Sultan described the report as a deliberate attempt to misrepresent his position and use his name to advance partisan political interests.

He stressed that he remains committed to his role as a father figure to all Nigerians, irrespective of their political affiliations, religious beliefs or ethnic backgrounds.

According to the statement, the Sultan’s palace remains open to every Nigerian without discrimination, regardless of political persuasion.

“The Sultan’s doors cannot be shut against anyone who comes to him, regardless of political affiliation or persuasion. His Eminence has consistently demonstrated that he is the father of all and will continue to relate with all Nigerians without discrimination,” the statement added.

The Sultan also urged the public to disregard the report, maintaining that he has not endorsed any candidate ahead of the 2027 presidential election and has no intention of taking sides in the contest.
