Atiku’s presidential ambition a ‘cheap product from Temu’ — Babachir Lawal

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has described former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition as a “cheap product from Temu” while accusing him of influencing the candidate selection process of the African Democratic Congress in Adamawa State.

Lawal made the remarks in the latest edition of his “Kachalla Series”, published on his verified Facebook page on Sunday.

The former SGF alleged that the ADC replaced its Adamawa State governorship primary winner, Engineer Umar Suleiman, with Tukur Moddibo, claiming the decision was influenced by Atiku and other party leaders.

According to Lawal, Suleiman emerged as the winner of the party’s governorship primary before his name was allegedly substituted following pressure from Atiku and other senior figures.

He accused Atiku of allowing ethnic and religious considerations to influence political decisions, alleging that the development reinforced concerns he had previously expressed about a possible Atiku presidency.

Lawal also criticised the ADC leadership over the alleged substitution, arguing that the decision could undermine the party’s chances in the 2027 governorship election in Adamawa.

He alleged that the development was part of a wider political arrangement aimed at weakening certain interests in the state while promoting others.

Using an online marketplace analogy, Lawal claimed that the All Progressives Congress had “donated” its governorship candidate to Adamawa and alleged that the ADC had taken a similar approach.

He then described Atiku’s presidential ambition as appearing like a “cheap product from TEMU.”

Lawal questioned how Atiku was allegedly able to influence the national leadership of the ADC, accusing the former vice president of placing personal political interests above broader considerations.

However, the former SGF said the alleged substitution would be challenged in court.

He claimed that the decision violated electoral laws, the ADC constitution and the party’s guidelines governing its primary elections.

Lawal urged voters in Adamawa to consider alternative political options ahead of the 2027 elections, stressing that the ultimate decision would rest with the people of the state.

The allegations come amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition figures and parties intensifying preparations for the polls.
