Our party members thought FG would write Osun election results: APC Chieftain
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Farouk Aliyu, has said some members of the party wrongly assumed that the Federal Government would manipulate the results of the Osun State governorship election to guarantee victory for its candidate, Bola Oyebamiji.
The APC lost Saturday’s election to the Accord Party, with the incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke securing re-election by a margin of 66,252 votes.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Monday, Aliyu said the assumption that the Federal Government would intervene in the election contributed to the party’s defeat.
According to him, some APC members took Adeleke and his supporters for granted and failed to do the necessary groundwork in some areas.
“Yes, there were sentiments, and members of our party, I think, also had an overkill. Some thought that probably the Federal Government would come and just drive everybody and write the results,” Aliyu said.
He added that the APC’s supporters underestimated the strength of Adeleke’s political movement.
“Our members and supporters took Adeleke for granted, and the members of his party, his movement, in such a way that what we ordinarily ought to do in certain places, we didn’t do, thinking that, look, what is it? I will win the election. We can even do whatever to win the election. Well, that didn’t happen,” he stated.
Aliyu Condemns Fadahunsi’s ‘Kill’ Remark
The APC chieftain also condemned a controversial remark attributed to Senator Francis Fadahunsi during the election campaign.
Fadahunsi had been criticised over comments interpreted as a threat against members of the opposition Accord Party. He later clarified that he meant supporters should “kill Accord with votes,” rather than engage in physical violence.
Aliyu, however, said the comment was inappropriate regardless of its interpretation.
“I think what he did was very wrong, for coming out to say ‘kill’,” he said.
