2027: Court withdraws four suits challenging Yayi’s APC candidacy in Ogun
Four separate lawsuits challenging the emergence of Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Ogun State have been withdrawn by the plaintiffs.
The cases were filed by individuals and members of different political parties seeking to challenge Adeola’s emergence as the party’s candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
The suits were subsequently discontinued one after another as political activities continue to intensify ahead of the election.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by Chief Kayode Odunaro, media adviser to Adeola.
The statement said the first case, Suit No. FHC/AB/CS/87/26, filed by Prof. Awolola Awoniyi under the Freedom of Information Act 2011 against Adeola, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), APC, Guardian Newspapers Limited and the Inspector-General of Police, was discontinued on August 24, 2026. The other three suits – FHC/ABJ/CS/844/26, FHC/ABJ/CS/989/2026 and FHC/ABJ/CS/884/26 – were withdrawn on September 7, 2026 in open court.
According to the statement, the parties involved in the suits included Ogun State chairmen of Booth Party, Young Progressive Party (YPP) and African Democratic Party (ADP), as well as members of the ADP and Labour Party (LP).
The statement said the plaintiffs had formally communicated their decisions to discontinue the cases through Notices of Discontinuance, with the defendants and their lawyers duly informed.
Although no official reason was given for the withdrawal of the suits, the statement claimed that the litigants had become convinced of the “merit” of Adeola’s candidacy and had opted to support his bid for the governorship.
The statement, however, did not provide independent evidence to substantiate the claim that the plaintiffs had decided to work for Adeola’s victory in the 2027 general election.
Reacting to the development, Adeola welcomed the withdrawal of the cases, saying his attention remained focused on delivering democratic dividends to the people of Ogun State.
He pledged to intensify his mobilisation and campaign across the state ahead of the February 2027 governorship election.
Adeola, a serving senator, emerged as the APC governorship candidate in Ogun State for the 2027 election.
The latest development effectively removes the four suits cited by his media office from the current legal challenges to his candidature.
