The Northern States Christian Elders Forum has warned President Bola Tinubu against interpreting Nigerians’ patience with the current economic situation as acceptance of continued hardship.

The forum, in a statement issued on Thursday by its Chairman, Elder Sunday Oibe, also urged the Federal Government to reverse the latest increase in the pump price of petrol.

According to the Christian elders, another increase in petrol prices would further worsen the economic pressure on citizens and deepen the uncertainty facing millions of Nigerians.

The forum called on President Tinubu to use the remaining period of his administration to address the immediate challenges confronting Nigerians, including the rising cost of living, unemployment, insecurity and the deterioration of critical infrastructure.

“The patience of Nigerians should not be mistaken for acceptance of perpetual hardship,” the forum warned.

The elders argued that if the government requires additional revenue to meet its programmes and financial obligations, it should explore other sustainable sources rather than repeatedly increasing the cost of petrol.

They said continued fuel price increases would further transfer the burden of economic adjustment to ordinary Nigerians, many of whom are already struggling with rising living costs.

The forum therefore urged the Federal Government to consider alternative revenue-generating measures that would reduce pressure on households and businesses.

It also called for greater attention to the broader economic and social challenges facing the country, stressing that tackling insecurity, unemployment, infrastructure deficits and the rising cost of living should remain priorities.

The elders maintained that sustainable solutions were needed to strengthen government revenue without continually imposing additional costs on citizens.
