Anambra Debt Row: Expect more Peter Obi’s records in coming days – Presidency

Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has said more information about the record of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, will emerge in the coming days.

Bwala made the statement amid an ongoing dispute between Obi and the Anambra State Government over loans and other financial obligations allegedly incurred during his tenure as governor of the state.

In a post on his X handle on Friday, the presidential aide accused Obi of taking loans while serving as governor and subsequently denying the claims.

Bwala also criticised Obi’s campaign promises, arguing that they should be assessed against his record in office as governor of Anambra State.

“They sit in the studio fighting government for collecting loans, only for them to hear that their hero c @PeterObi collected loans in Anambra and lied about it,” Bwala wrote.

He further claimed that Obi’s record as governor should form part of the assessment of his current presidential ambitions.

“Peter Obi himself is the case to be made against his aspirations. Everything about what he promises is fake as compared to what he has done as a governor,” he said.

Bwala also referred to reactions from individuals who have defended Obi during media discussions on the controversy, claiming that they were caught off guard by the allegations concerning loans taken by the former governor.

“His surrogates in the morning show were dumbfounded at the revelation about his loan claim,” he added.

The presidential aide suggested that the current controversy was only the beginning of a broader examination of Obi’s record.

“This is only testing the microphone, more records to come out in the coming days. He loves records, we would answer in kind,” Bwala said.

He, however, said the planned response would focus on Obi’s record rather than personal attacks.

“No insults, vitriol or hate speech; just his record. Selah,” he added.

The controversy follows allegations by the Anambra State Government that loans obtained during the administration of the former governor remain outstanding and are being serviced through deductions from the state’s federal allocations.

Obi has rejected allegations that he left outstanding debts and other liabilities, maintaining that he left the state without unpaid salaries, pensions or gratuities and has challenged those making the allegations to provide evidence.

The disagreement has increasingly become a political issue as parties and political figures position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
