The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has constituted a 10-member independent committee to investigate the reported deaths of 37 people who were being held by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State over suspected illegal mining.

The development follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive for a comprehensive, transparent and unhindered investigation into the incident, which occurred on Thursday, September 17, 2026.

Tunji-Ojo also ordered the suspension of all officers linked to the incident pending the outcome of the independent investigation.

The minister described the deaths as deeply disturbing, saying the government had a responsibility to provide the families of the deceased and the Nigerian public with a transparent account of what happened.

The committee has been mandated to establish the identities of the deceased and investigate the circumstances surrounding their arrest, detention and deaths.

It will also determine whether there was any responsibility, complicity, negligence or misconduct by individuals or institutions involved in the incident.

The committee is expected to recommend appropriate action, including compensation where applicable, as well as measures to prevent a recurrence.

Tunji-Ojo directed the NSCDC leadership and all officers connected to the matter to fully cooperate with the investigation.

He also ordered that all records and material evidence relating to the incident be preserved and made available to the committee.

“Any attempt to destroy or conceal evidence, intimidate witnesses or obstruct the investigation will be treated as a serious offence,” the minister warned.
