Trump to attend 2026 World Cup Draw in Washington, White House confirms
The White House on Monday confirmed that United States President Donald Trump will attend the draw for the FIFA World Cup finals scheduled to take place in Washington later this week.
The United States is co-hosting the 2026 tournament alongside Canada and Mexico, marking the first time the three North American nations will jointly stage football’s biggest global event.
White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, told reporters that the president would be present at the high-profile ceremony.
According to her, “On Friday, President Trump will attend the FIFA World Cup final draw at the Kennedy Centre,” a development that underscores the administration’s strong interest in leveraging the tournament for diplomatic and national appeal.
Trump has positioned the World Cup as one of the flagship events of his second term, tying it closely to next year’s celebration of America’s 250th independence anniversary.
However, the global sporting fiesta has not been insulated from the political tensions surrounding his administration’s stance on several contentious issues.
The president, a Republican, has repeatedly suggested the possibility of relocating matches from certain US host cities, citing concerns about rising crime and what he describes as illegal migration in some Democrat-led states.
His comments have stirred political debate and raised questions about the certainty of match venues less than two years before kickoff.
Despite the controversies, Washington will host Friday’s draw, where participating nations will learn their group-stage opponents as excitement builds ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
