FG vows wider access to education, jobs for persons with disabilities
The Federal Government has restated its commitment to building an inclusive society that gives Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) the support, opportunities, and enabling environment needed to thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development.
The pledge was made in Abuja during the commemoration of the International Day of Persons With Disabilities, themed “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress.”
Representing the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, the Permanent Secretary overseeing the General Services Office, Mohammed Sanusi Danjuma, said the Tinubu administration remains determined to break down the barriers that limit access to education, employment, and leadership positions for millions of Nigerians living with disabilities.
He added that the government is deliberately promoting leadership development among PLWDs to ensure their representation in strategic sectors and decision-making spaces across the country.
Danjuma urged Nigerians to discard stereotypes, stigma, and the long-held prejudices that continue to marginalise persons with disabilities.
According to him, creating a society where everyone can participate and benefit equally requires collective effort from citizens, institutions, and government at all levels.
The International Day of Persons With Disabilities is observed globally to promote the dignity, rights, and well-being of PLWDs, while drawing attention to the social, cultural, economic, and political gains of creating inclusive systems that allow them to play full roles in national life.
