Ex-Anambra Gov Chris Ngige remanded in Kuje Prison after facing EFCC in multiple corruption allegations
A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has ordered the remand of former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
The development follows his arraignment on alleged corruption charges.
Ngige, who pleaded not guilty to all eight counts brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), will remain in custody until Monday, December 15, 2025, when his bail application is scheduled to be heard.
The former minister faces allegations of granting undue advantage to associates in the award of multiple contracts between 2015 and 2023 during his tenure as supervising Minister of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF). He is also accused of corruptly accepting gifts worth tens of millions of naira through his organizations.
The charges include:
Awarding seven contracts worth N366 million to Cezimo Nigeria Limited, whose MD is described as his associate.
Conferring eight contracts worth N583 million to Zitacom Nigeria Limited, linked to him.
Awarding eight contracts worth N362 million to Jeff & Xris Limited, allegedly his associate.
Granting four contracts worth N668 million to Olde English Consolidated Limited, also linked to him.
Accepting gifts totaling N93,653,000 from contractors through his campaign and scholarship organizations.
During Friday’s proceedings, Ngige’s lawyer, Patrick Ikweato, SAN, requested his release on health grounds pending the bail hearing. The EFCC opposed the request, claiming Ngige could be a flight risk.
Justice Mariam Hassan adjourned the case to December 15 for the bail application hearing.
The case, FCT/HC/CR/726/2025, has drawn significant public attention, marking the latest development in Nigeria’s ongoing fight against corruption.
