Ndidi appointed new Super Eagles Captain ahead of AFCON 2025

Wilfred Ndidi has been officially named the new captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria on the eve of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The defensive midfielder takes over leadership of the national team following the retirement of William Troost-Ekong and Ahmed Musa, who both previously served as captains of the senior men’s side.

The 29-year-old Besiktas midfielder, who was vice-captain, was confirmed as team captain on Friday after the Super Eagles arrived in Morocco for the tournament and held their first training session.

Speaking with the team’s media, Ndidi revealed that he has consulted with senior squad members about his new role and requested the continued support of all staff to ensure a seamless transition.

“It’s a huge responsibility,” he said, adding that “with the help of the players, I think everything will go smoothly.

“I’ve had conversations with a couple of players, just some of the older players, to try to make them understand the reason why we’re here. We also need support from the staff. We’re all in this together.”

The Super Eagles failed to qualify or the 2026 World Cup following the continental playoffs loss, but Ndidi believes the AFCON tournament is another opportunity at redemption.

He added that the Eric Chelle-tutored team is ready to make its mark in the 35th edition of the competition.

“It was a sad one missing out on the World Cup, but this is another opportunity. Another day, another opportunity to correct the wrongs, put smiles on faces of Nigerians, and make the country proud once again,” he said.

“It’s not going to be an easy task, but we’re really up for it. We look forward to enjoying it together.”

Ndidi will lead the Super Eagles as the new captain in their first group match against Tanzania on December 23.
