BREAKING: Peter Obi dumps Labour Party, officially joins coalition-backed ADC
Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr Peter Obi, has officially defected to the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, announced his defection on Tuesday at a well-attended political gathering held at the Nike Lake Resort, Enugu, where leaders and stakeholders of the ADC coalition were present.
Speaking at the event, Obi said the decision was driven by the need to begin early preparations for what he described as a national “rescue journey.”
“We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey,” Obi declared.
He stressed the importance of safeguarding the electoral process, vowing that efforts would be made to resist election malpractice through lawful means.
“We will resist rigging of elections by every lawful means in 2027,” he said.
Obi also called for early scrutiny of candidates’ credentials, urging political actors to begin the pre-election process immediately to avoid prolonged legal battles after elections.
“We still have a one-year window for everyone to go and verify the schools they attended. We do not want to return to court again only to be told it is a pre-election matter,” he stated.
According to him, early compliance with electoral requirements would strengthen democratic integrity and reduce post-election litigation.
“The pre-election process should start now,” Obi added.
The event was attended by key figures within the ADC, including its National Chairman, Senator David Mark, further underscoring the significance of the defection and the growing momentum of the coalition.
Obi’s move is widely seen as a major political development that could reshape alliances and strategies ahead of the 2027 elections.
