Tinubu holds separate meetings with Makinde, Mutfwang at Presidential Villa
The two governors arrived the State House separately on Thursday afternoon, underscoring the individual nature of the consultations.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday held separate meetings with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The two governors arrived at the State House at different times, with Mutfwang arriving shortly after 3:00 p.m., while Makinde followed about 30 minutes later, according to observations by correspondents at the Villa.
The closed-door meetings are taking place amid ongoing political realignments as consultations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Makinde, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), remains one of the few governors elected on the party’s platform who have resisted the wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Oyo governor is also widely believed to be harbouring presidential ambitions and is seen as positioning himself for the PDP’s presidential ticket in 2027.
Mutfwang, on the other hand, recently defected from the PDP to the APC, joining a growing list of opposition figures who have aligned with the ruling party in recent months.
Thursday’s meeting marked Mutfwang’s first known engagement with President Tinubu since his official defection.
President Tinubu has, in recent months, stepped up engagements with governors across party lines, a development political observers say is linked to ongoing consultations ahead of the next electoral cycle.
