Former Kano deputy Gov Gawuna officially joins ADC, receives membership card

The 2023 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, Nasiru Gawuna, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Gawuna, who previously served as deputy governor of the state, completed his registration with the party on Tuesday and was issued his membership card at his Gawuna Ward in Nasarawa Local Government Area.

The event drew the presence of notable political figures, including former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; the immediate past deputy governor, Aminu Gwarzo; and the state chairman of the party, Musa Ungogo. Thousands of supporters also turned out for the occasion.

Speaking after his registration, Gawuna thanked his supporters and party leaders for their backing, pledging his commitment to strengthening the ADC in Kano State.

His defection comes amid a wave of political realignments in Kano State ahead of the 2027 general elections, with key actors shifting alliances and recalibrating their political strategies.

The development follows his recent resignation from the APC, which he described as a personal and voluntary decision in a letter addressed to his ward chairman.

In the letter dated March 29, 2026, Gawuna thanked the APC for the opportunity to serve and contribute to the party’s growth during his membership.

The former deputy governor had also earlier stepped down as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, effective March 31, 2026, in compliance with a directive by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu requiring political appointees to resign in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

He had expressed gratitude to the President for the trust reposed in him, noting that he considered it an honour to have served in various capacities, including as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano.

Gawuna’s latest move is widely seen as a significant boost to the ADC in Kano, particularly given his political influence and performance in the 2023 governorship election, where he polled 890,705 votes.

Political observers say his defection is likely to further reshape the political landscape of the state, as alignments continue to evolve ahead of the next electoral cycle.
