ADC Governorship candidate sparks reactions after sharing boiled corn to supporters

The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Oyo State, Taofeek Adegoke, has stirred debate on social media after a video emerged showing him distributing boiled corn to supporters during a public outing.

The now-viral clip captured the politician standing beside a large pot of freshly cooked corn as he personally handed portions to enthusiastic supporters gathered around him by the roadside.

In the footage, supporters stretched out their hands to receive the corn while chanting slogans in support of his governorship ambition. Some repeatedly hailed him as “Mr Governor,” cheering as he interacted with them.

The video has generated mixed reactions online.

While many praised Adegoke’s approachability and described the gesture as evidence of his willingness to connect with ordinary citizens, others questioned whether such public displays represented genuine grassroots engagement or were simply campaign tactics aimed at attracting public sympathy.

The incident has reignited conversations about the increasing use of informal roadside interactions by politicians seeking to strengthen their connection with voters ahead of elections.

Although Adegoke has yet to comment publicly on the video, it has continued to attract widespread attention across Oyo State and beyond.

The development comes amid a growing trend in which everyday food items have become recurring symbols in Nigeria’s political discourse.

About a month ago, billionaire businessman and philanthropist Tony Elumelu also trended online after a video showed him stopping at a roadside to buy roasted corn from a local vendor before eating it during the encounter.

Similarly, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu had encouraged Nigerians facing economic hardship to explore small-scale businesses such as selling akara, roasted corn and kulikuli as alternative sources of income.

Those comments, combined with recent public appearances by political figures, have further elevated roasted and boiled corn as symbolic references in discussions surrounding leadership, economic realities and grassroots politics.

The debate also recalls comments made earlier this year by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who criticised politicians for what he described as staged roadside publicity ahead of elections.

Speaking at a public event on February 23, 2026, Wike argued that electoral success should be earned through measurable performance rather than symbolic public gestures.

«”Winning an election is not by buying corn on the road. Winning an election is to show the people what you have done,” the minister said.»

Weeks later, Wike revisited the issue while commenting on campaign activities involving former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, referring to some politicians as “emergency corn chewers,” a remark widely interpreted as criticism of public relations stunts designed to portray closeness to ordinary Nigerians.

Food-related political symbolism has long featured in Nigeria’s electoral landscape.

Over the years, politicians have distributed rice, bread, noodles, poultry and other household items during campaigns and outreach programmes as part of efforts to connect with voters.

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose famously defended the concept of “stomach infrastructure,” arguing that addressing hunger should take precedence over other developmental concerns.

According to Fayose, “When we banish hunger, we can talk of roads and other social infrastructure. A hungry man may not value a road that is tarred because his major concern is to have food to eat.”

His remarks have since remained one of the most frequently cited references in debates surrounding food-based political campaigns and voter engagement in Nigeria.
