“ADC Is Dead” — Akpabio reacts as lawmakers defect to NDC

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that he believes the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is no longer politically relevant, saying the party has effectively “died” amid a wave of defections rocking the opposition.

Akpabio made the remark on Tuesday during plenary after reading a letter announcing the defection of Abia South senator, Enyinnaya Abaribe, who moved from the ADC to the Labour Party.

The Senate President also referenced earlier political shifts involving former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who reportedly left the ADC for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Reacting to the ongoing defections, Akpabio said the pattern had become repetitive and chaotic, questioning the stability of political parties involved in the realignments.

“I think ADC is dead. How many times are you defecting? A month? Three times?” he said, urging that all defections be properly documented to avoid confusion in the legislative records.

He further directed that records of lawmakers changing parties be compiled systematically, adding that movements between parties such as ADC, NDC, and others should be properly tracked.

“Compile the names of those defecting from all the political parties and their party destinations,” he stated during plenary.

The comments come amid a broader wave of political defections and coalition movements across Nigeria, as parties reposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
