He is a ‘political bird moving platform to platform’ — Ganduje mocks Kwankwaso
The immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has taken a swipe at former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, describing him as a “political bird” constantly moving from one party to another.
Ganduje made the remark during an interview on BBC Hausa, where he weighed in on recent political developments in Kano and the wider realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso, who was the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), had initially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in March, citing internal crisis within his former party. However, weeks later, he moved again—this time to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), alongside former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
According to Ganduje, such frequent political shifts reflect instability, insisting that Kwankwaso’s influence is waning.
“He has become a political drifter; a political bird that can perch anywhere, moving from one platform to another,” Ganduje said, dismissing any suggestion that Kwankwaso’s movements could threaten the APC’s dominance.
He also argued that internal rivalries within the ADC—particularly among presidential hopefuls—would weaken the party’s cohesion, adding that such divisions are already evident.
Ganduje further claimed that Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, had earlier anticipated these challenges, which he said informed his decision to align with the APC in pursuit of political stability.
Highlighting the ruling party’s strength, Ganduje maintained that the APC continues to consolidate its hold across the country, noting that a significant number of state governors are aligning with the party.
The comments come amid a wave of defections and shifting alliances across Nigeria’s political landscape, as parties reposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
