A’Ibom Assembly moves against covered, unregistered vehicles, orders crackdown
The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has passed a resolution directing security agencies to take decisive action against motorists using covered number plates and unregistered vehicles within the state.
The resolution was adopted following a motion of urgent public importance moved by Mr. Uwem Imoh-Ita, the lawmaker representing Mkpat Enin constituency.
In its directive, the House mandated the Akwa Ibom State Police Command to strictly enforce existing laws prohibiting the use of obscured or unregistered vehicle number plates, emphasizing that such practices pose security risks and hinder effective law enforcement across the state.
The assembly further directed the state Ministry of Works and Fire Service to take the matter up with construction companies in the state to ensure compliance.
It also urged the Federal Road Safety Corps in the state to intensify surveillance on the matter in the interest of public safety
Moving the motion, Imoh-Ita said that some residents of that state had developed the habit of using covered number plates and unregistered vehicles.
“It has been noticed that many vehicles belonging to construction companies that operate in the state are guilty of this.
“Their vehicles, especially heavy-duty trucks, ply the roads without registration or identification numbers, this is not allowed,” he said.
The assemblyman said that such vehicles posed serious threats to public safety, because they could not be traced in the event of an accident. (NAN)
