Akwa Ibom recruits 1,000 Teachers, 2,000 Health Workers, over 4,000 others into Civil Service
The Head of the State Civil Service, Mrs Elsie Peters, disclosed this during a media parley organised to commence activities for the 2026 Public Service Day celebration.
The Akwa Ibom State Government has approved the recruitment of 7,069 personnel into various sectors of the state public service.
The Head of the State Civil Service, Mrs Elsie Peters, disclosed this during a media parley organised to commence activities for the 2026 Public Service Day celebration.
Peters said the recruitment was approved as part of the administration of Governor Umo Eno’s efforts to address manpower shortages in critical sectors, strengthen the state workforce and improve service delivery.
According to her, the approved recruitment covers education, healthcare, the mainstream civil service, the judiciary and other government institutions.
The breakdown includes 1,000 secondary school teachers, 2,000 personnel for the medical sector and about 1,000 workers for the mainstream civil service.
The state government also approved the recruitment of 1,000 primary school personnel under the State Universal Basic Education Board, 1,000 judiciary officers, 100 Occupational Safety Officers and 25 Legal Officers for the Ministry of Justice.
The Head of Service also highlighted measures introduced by the administration to improve the welfare of serving and retired public servants.
She said the state had paid more than N90 billion out of over N111 billion in inherited gratuity liabilities, while salaries had continued to be paid regularly.
Peters added that Akwa Ibom implemented the N80,000 minimum wage in November 2024 and introduced a 13th-month salary as part of efforts to improve workers’ welfare.
Other measures, she said, include pension increases for retirees, settlement of outstanding pension contributions, housing support, health insurance, welfare bonuses and teachers’ wardrobe allowance.
Public servants have also benefited from continuous training and the provision of modern working tools, according to the Head of Service.
On career progression, Peters said the government had strengthened the promotion process through civil service examinations, the release of outstanding promotion results and the completion of the 2026 promotion exercise.
She said the measures had provided eligible officers with opportunities for career advancement while contributing to improved motivation across the public service.
Peters also cited the appointment of new Permanent Secretaries and an acting Surveyor-General as steps taken to strengthen the leadership structure of the state public service.
However, she stressed that improved welfare must be accompanied by increased productivity.
She urged public servants to uphold professionalism, integrity, discipline and innovation while remaining dedicated to their responsibilities and committed to effective service delivery.
