Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri set to join APC on Monday
Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri is set to officially join the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, in what sources describe as one of the most significant political shifts in the South-South since 2023.
According to reports, President Bola Tinubu, alongside APC governors and members of the party’s national working committee (NWC), will formally receive Diri into the ruling party.
Sources familiar with the development revealed that Diri, who resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on October 15, had been holding discreet talks with key APC leaders to finalise his move. A party insider disclosed that the delay in his official defection was to ensure a smooth “integration of the PDP bloc into the APC’s Bayelsa structure” and to avoid internal conflicts ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The defection marks a major realignment in Bayelsa politics and underscores the APC’s renewed efforts to expand its dominance in the oil-rich region traditionally controlled by the PDP.
In recent months, the PDP has suffered several high-profile defections, including lawmakers in the national assembly, further weakening its influence.
This year alone, four sitting PDP governors, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Peter Mbah of Enugu, and Douye Diri of Bayelsa, have joined the APC, reducing the party’s control to just eight states.
There is also growing speculation that Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas may be the next to defect, continuing the wave of political crossovers shaking the PDP.
