Chelsea edge Tottenham 1-0 as Joao Pedro strikes brilliant winner
Joao Pedro ended his 10-game goal drought with a well-taken finish to hand Chelsea a deserved victory, as Tottenham fans voiced their frustration with boos after another disappointing home performance.
The 24-year-old Brazilian, who has battled fitness and form issues in recent weeks, showed composure in the 64th minute by chipping the ball past goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.
His goal came after relentless pressing from Moises Caicedo forced Micky van de Ven into a costly defensive error inside his own box.
Pedro could have easily scored a hat-trick in the first half but was twice denied by Vicario, who pulled off superb saves, first diving low to his right, then reacting sharply to tip away a powerful volley.
Despite Chelsea’s dominance, the lone goal proved enough to see off a lacklustre Tottenham side that lacked creativity and managed just three shots on target.
Mohamed Kudus had their best chances, firing over from distance in the 33rd minute before forcing a save from Robert Sanchez in first-half added time.
Chelsea had opportunities to extend their lead as Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez both squandered good chances, while Vicario again denied Pedro, and substitute Jamie Gittens blasted over from close range.
The win lifts Chelsea to fourth place, level on 17 points with Spurs but trailing on goal difference.
Tottenham’s home struggles, however, remain a major concern, as they have managed only three wins in their last 19 games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a run spanning the tenures of former boss Ange Postecoglou and current manager Thomas Frank.
