Chelsea exits Champions League after 8-2 aggregate defeat to PSG
Chelsea’s Champions League campaign ended in disappointment as they lost 3-0 at Stamford Bridge to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), suffering an 8-2 aggregate defeat, their joint-heaviest in a two-legged European tie.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring for PSG in the sixth minute, followed by Bradley Barcola’s strike in the 14th. Substitute Senny Mayulu added a third goal, sealing PSG’s comeback and knocking Chelsea out of the competition.
Despite creating opportunities, Chelsea struggled defensively, with hesitant play from Mamadou Sarr and Moises Caicedo contributing to the defeat.
The Blues’ head coach, Liam Rosenior, substituted key players in the second half, including Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernandez, and Joao Pedro, as the match slipped away. Trevoh Chalobah was later stretchered off, leaving Chelsea with 10 men for the closing minutes.
Chelsea’s Champions League woes highlight the squad’s inconsistency in European competitions. While capable of winning cups such as the Conference League and Club World Cup, the team has now lost four consecutive knockout ties in the Champions League. Young players and first-time participants in Europe struggled to cope with the intensity of knockout football.
PSG, under Luis Enrique, demonstrated their European strength, overturning a three-goal deficit from the first leg with disciplined, relentless attacking play.
Enrique’s team continues to assert dominance over English sides, adding to their reputation as one of the favorites to win the competition this season.
Chelsea now turn focus to domestic challenges, hosting Everton in the Premier League, while PSG prepare for a Ligue 1 clash against Nice.
