Court nullifies APC Zamfara North Senatorial primary, orders fresh election

The Federal High Court sitting in Gusau, Zamfara State, has nullified the emergence of Senator Sahabi Ya’u Kaura as the 2027 senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Zamfara North.

The court, presided over by Justice Hassan Dikko, ordered the APC to conduct a fresh primary election within 14 days.

The judgment followed a suit filed by an APC senatorial aspirant, Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, challenging the validity of the party’s earlier primary election.

Kaura had emerged victorious at the APC primary held on May 19, 2026, after securing 65,642 votes to defeat other aspirants, including Shinkafi, Hannafi Musa-Moriki and Tijjani Yahaya.

However, the court’s ruling has effectively voided the outcome of the exercise and removed the basis for Kaura’s claim to the APC ticket for the Zamfara North Senatorial District.

The ruling means the APC is now required to organise another primary within the 14-day period stipulated by the court.

The fresh exercise will provide Kaura and other eligible aspirants another opportunity to contest for the party’s ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Reacting to the judgment, Shinkafi welcomed the decision, describing it as a positive outcome for his legal challenge.

The development comes as political parties intensify preparations and internal processes ahead of the 2027 elections.
