Enugu Police arrest stepmother for allegedly beating of 9-year-old stepdaughter to death
The Enugu State Government and the police have taken action following the alleged killing of a 9-year-old girl, Ogechi Amanda John, by her stepmother, Mrs. Ogechi John, in the Emene area of Enugu metropolis.
Mrs. John, an indigene of Oderiko in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was arrested on Monday morning after allegedly beating the child to death at their residence in Nchatancha, Emene.
Neighbours said the incident occurred around 3 p.m. on Sunday, adding that the deceased had reportedly suffered repeated maltreatment in the home prior to the tragic event.
The Enugu State Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, confirmed the government’s intervention, describing the incident as unacceptable and assuring that justice would be pursued without delay.
She said the administration of Governor Peter Mbah maintains zero tolerance for child abuse and homicide, adding that authorities moved quickly upon receiving information to ensure the suspect’s arrest.
According to her, the state government will work closely with security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation and speedy prosecution.
“No one has the right to take another person’s life, especially that of a child. We condemn this in totality,” she stated.
The police say investigations are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
