FCC express worry as only 472 candidates attend Army screening in Oyo

The ongoing Nigerian Army recruitment screening exercise in Oyo State has recorded a low turnout of shortlisted candidates, raising concerns from the Federal Character Commission (FCC) over the state’s representation in the exercise.

The FCC disclosed that only 472 of the 941 shortlisted candidates reported for screening at the 2 Mechanised Division, Adekunle Fajuyi Military Cantonment, Ibadan.

Speaking during a monitoring visit to the screening centre, the FCC Commissioner representing Oyo State, Prince Ayodeji Abass Aleshinloye, described the turnout as disappointing, noting that the number of shortlisted candidates was already considered low for a state with Oyo’s population.

He attributed the situation partly to the failure of many applicants to present themselves for screening and the inability of several candidates to provide complete documentation.

According to Aleshinloye, more than half of the candidates who appeared for the exercise failed to present original credentials, while others had inconsistencies in their documents that required correction.

He urged affected applicants to immediately regularise their documents and work with their parents or guardians to obtain the necessary originals to avoid disqualification.

The commissioner warned that candidates who fail to meet documentation requirements risk losing the opportunity to proceed in the recruitment process.

He also appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, local government authorities and community stakeholders to intensify awareness campaigns at the grassroots level to encourage greater participation in future recruitment exercises.

Aleshinloye reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to fairness, equity and inclusiveness in federal recruitment, stressing that applicants must also play their part by complying with all screening requirements.

“When opportunities are provided in the spirit of fairness and equity, applicants must also do the right thing by presenting themselves and meeting all necessary requirements,” he said.

He further encouraged young people in the state to take advantage of future opportunities in the military, paramilitary agencies and the police by participating actively and diligently throughout the recruitment process.
