Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong converts to Islam, recites Shahadah in Doha
Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has reportedly converted to Islam after reciting the Shahadah, the Islamic declaration of faith, in Doha, Qatar.
The development was reported on Wednesday by Qatari newspaper Al-Arab, while Islamic cleric Dr Muhammad Salah also shared a video on his verified Facebook account showing the Nigerian defender reciting the testimonies.
Troost-Ekong, 33, currently plays for Qatar Stars League side Al-Ahli, having joined the club in January 2026 on a one-and-a-half-year contract.
The defender first moved to the Arab region in the summer of 2024, when he signed for Saudi Arabian club Al-Khaleej.
Since joining Al-Ahli, Troost-Ekong has made 14 appearances across all competitions, including one appearance in the ongoing season.
Troost-Ekong’s International Career
Troost-Ekong enjoyed a distinguished career with the Super Eagles, earning 83 caps for Nigeria between 2015 and 2025 and scoring eight goals.
He was a key member of the Nigerian squad that reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where he was named Player of the Tournament.
The defender also represented Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games, establishing himself as one of the country’s most experienced defenders over the past decade.
His reported conversion to Islam has since attracted attention following the publication of the video showing him reciting the Shahadah in Doha.
