Super Eagles defender Troost-Ekong retires from International Football after 83 caps
Super Eagles vice-captain, William Troost-Ekong, has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a distinguished national team career spanning nearly a decade.
Troost-Ekong, who earned 83 caps for Nigeria, confirmed that he will no longer play for the Super Eagles following a period of reflection on his journey with the national team.
His decision marks the close of an era for one of Nigeria’s most consistent and loyal defenders.
During his time with the Super Eagles, the 31-year-old featured in five major tournaments, including three Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaigns and two FIFA World Cup appearances.
He leaves with three medals, highlighting his contribution to Nigeria’s continued relevance on the continental stage.
Widely admired for his leadership, discipline and commitment, Troost-Ekong played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s defensive setup for years, forming solid partnerships and captaining the team at various points.
In his farewell message, he expressed gratitude to Nigerians, his teammates, the coaching staff and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for their support throughout his international journey.
His exit leaves a significant gap in the team’s defensive line, as the Super Eagles prepare for future qualifiers and tournaments without one of their most experienced figures.
