Hackers breach Zenith Bank database, customers’ contact details exposed

Hackers have breached the database of Zenith Bank, one of Nigeria’s largest financial institutions, gaining access to limited customer information, including email addresses and phone numbers.

The bank confirmed the cyberattack in a message sent to customers on Tuesday, describing it as part of a broader global cyber campaign affecting organisations across different sectors.

According to Zenith Bank, the breach did not compromise customers’ banking credentials or affect the security of its banking services and digital channels, which it said remain fully operational.

The lender stated that it immediately activated its incident response protocols and other cybersecurity measures after detecting the intrusion.

“As a precaution, we encourage our customers to remain vigilant against phishing emails, text messages, or phone calls, and to never disclose their password, PIN, One-Time Password (OTP), or other security credentials to anyone,” the bank said.

Zenith added that investigations into the incident are ongoing and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting customer information.

The development comes amid growing concerns over cyber threats targeting financial institutions in Nigeria.

In August 2024, Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) reported attempts to compromise its website domain, although the bank said customer data was not affected.

The latest breach also follows earlier warnings by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) about increasing cyber fraud attempts aimed at gaining access to Nigerians’ personal and financial information.

The CBN had alerted the public to fraudulent emails and messages falsely claiming to originate from the apex bank, urging Nigerians to avoid clicking suspicious links and to verify any communication purportedly issued by financial institutions.

Zenith Bank thanked customers for their continued trust and said further updates would be provided as investigations progress.
